NFL: Patriots cut Cam Newton, set to start Mac Jones

Cam Newton has been released by the New England Patriots following the preseason and prior to their matchup with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 12. Bill Belichick previously named Newton as the starter but things have clearly changed since then. Not only has Mac Jones impressed during the preseason but Newton has also been forced to miss practice because of COVID-19 protocols. According to the Guardian, Belichick said that played no role in the release. Newton struggled in 2020, finishing with 2,657 passing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 15 games. After being selected with the 15th pick in April, Jones will be starting under center against the Dolphins. He showed promise in the preseason, completing 69.2% of his passes for 7.5 yards per attempt. Newton will likely sign elsewhere before the season starts next week.
