NBA: Anthony Edwards ignites Timberwolves win at Pacers
The Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a 2-game losing steak, moving past the Indiana Pacers 129-120 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. Anthony Edwards dropped a game-high 37 points including seven 3-pointers for the Timberwolves, while Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in 15 points and 13 rebounds. Edwards knocked down a triple in the first quarter to become the 4th youngest player in NBA history to record 2,500 points. The sophomore sensation ranks slightly behind LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Minnesota improved to 30-27 following the win at Indiana.
Edwards beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter as he finished a left-handed layup to bring the Timberwolves within 37-33. Chris Finch's team used that momentum to tie a season-high 41 points in the second quarter, including a 13-0 run to take a double digit lead into halftime. D'Angelo Russell contributed 10 points and eight assists in the first half as Minnesota had four players in double figures. Oshae Brissett had a game-high 18 points at the break, while Tyrese Haliburton paced the Pacers with 10 assists in his second start since being traded from the Sacramento Kings.
Haliburton hit a floater at the end of the third quarter to keep Indiana within striking distance but a late run was enough to seal the road victory for the Timberwolves. After knocking down another shot from beyond the arc, Edwards beat Brissett off the dribble for an and-one to quiet the crowd in the fourth quarter. Towns grabbed an offensive rebound and found Jaden McDaniels for a one-handed flush to put the finishing touches on the win. McDaniels compiled 11 points and two rebounds. Russell finished with 23 points and six assists, while Patrick Beverley totaled 13 points for Minnesota.
The Timberwolves also ended a 3-game losing streak at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and swept the season series against Indiana for the first time since in 15 years. Indiana fell to 19-39 with their sixth consecutive loss, despite Brissett scoring a season-high 22 points and 13 rebounds. Haliburton had 22 points and a game-high 16 assists, while Lance Stephenson put up 21 points off the bench. Jalen Smith added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Minnesota hosts a pair of projected playoff teams in the Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets next week prior to the long awaited All-Star break.
