NBA: 76ers sign Joel Embiid to $196 million supermax extension
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has agreed to 4-year deal worth $196 million to remain with the team that drafted him in 2014. Embiid finished second in the MVP race a year ago, averaging 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game, while leading the 76ers to the top seed in the Eastern Conference. He was arguably just as good as MVP-winner Nikola Jokic but Embiid played just 51 games due to injury. The 27-year-old signed an extension with Philadelphia in 2017 and is cemented as the face of the franchise. Embiid will become a free agent following the 2026-27 season. Kevin Durant (4-year, $198 million) and Luka Doncic (5-year, $207 million) recently signed similar deals with the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks, respectively, to secure their futures as well. Embiid will look to make it five consecutive All-Star appearances in 2022 while hoping the franchise can take another step forward as a contender under Doc Rivers.
