Killian Hayes returns to the Motor City to face his former franchise
After spending four seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Killian Hayes is slated to face his former franchise as the Long Island Nets meet the Motor City Cruise on Saturday afternoon at Wayne State Fieldhouse! Hayes was selected with the 7th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft before being released by the Pistons last year. Despite struggling to meet expectations during his time in Detroit, Hayes flashed potential throughout his career and has developed into one of the best players in the G-League.
The France native is putting up 20.7 points, 8.5 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game, helping the Nets to a 6-6 record including a recent 4-game winning streak. Hayes was simply dominant in a recent game, posting 26 points and 18 assists. The former Pistons guard leads Long Island along with backcourt mates Dariq Whitehead and Reece Beekman, plus forward Tosan Evbuomwan and center Drew Timme. Timme is currently averaging a team-high 21.3 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
Motor City is hoping to shut down Hayes and pick up a much-needed win over the Nets to get back into the mix for a playoff berth. Even though the team has struggled to compete at a high level with a 5-8 record, the Cruise's rookie duo Daniss Jenkins and Tolu Smith have been bright spots this season. Jenkins is compiling a team-best 20.2 points and 6.6 assists, while Smith is scoring 17.6 points and 14.1 rebounds per game en route to earning a two-way contract with the Pistons in recent weeks.
