- Pac-12 champ (USC, Washington)

- Group of 5 (BYU, Coastal Carolina)

Paths to the playoffs:

- Alabama: LSU, Florida

- ND: Syracuse, Clemson

- Ohio State: MSU, Michigan, NW

- Clemson: Virginia Tech, ND

- Texas A&M: Auburn, Tennessee

- Florida: Tennessee, LSU, Alabama
