CFB: Henderson breaks Buckeyes freshman rushing record

TreVeyon Henderson had a historic performance in #9 Ohio State's 41-20 win over Tulsa on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. After earning his first career start, Henderson broke Archie Griffin's freshman rushing record (239 yards) from 1972. Henderson ran for 277 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries, including a 48-yard score to put the Buckeyes up 20-6 early in the third quarter. Tulsa continued to compete into the fourth quarter, though, as Davis Brin connected with Josh Johnson to bring the Golden Hurricane within a score. CJ Stroud struggled for most of the day but a late touchdown to Garrett Wilson and a pick six from Cameron Martinez helped seal the win. Brin carved up Ohio State's middling defense for a game-high 428 passing yards, while Wilson led the Buckeyes with six receptions for 70 yards.

Ryan Day discussed Henderson's performance in the postgame interview: "Since he's come here, he's worked very hard and has been very mature. He does not act like a freshman and takes his job very seriously. I thought he ran hard today and our offensive line really established the line of scrimmage and we were able to control the game at times. When he gets to the second level, he gives us the opportunity to come out the back end and hit home runs which you saw in the first game and then you saw a few times today." Henderson also touched on his record-setting day: "I had a lot of big goals for myself. I reached one of my goals today but I've got a plenty more so I have to keep working." Thanks to Henderson, Ohio State is back in the win column but it's clear both sides of the ball need to improve in order to win a 5th straight Big Ten title.
