CBB: Michigan upsets Colorado State despite double digit deficit


Michigan erased a 15-point deficit in the first half to upset Colorado State 73-65 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. After falling down 28-13, the Wolverines looked dead in the water but Frankie Collins scored seven straight to cut Colorado State's lead to 36-29 at halftime. Collins earned his first start since DeVante' Jones was ruled out and freshman guard certainly made the most of his opportunity. Michigan's momentum continued into the second half as Caleb Houstan knocked down back to back 3-pointers to give the Wolverines a lead they would never relinquish.


Colorado State built an early lead as center Dischon Thomas couldn't miss from beyond the arc. Collins sparked the Wolverines run with a pair of fastbreak finishes including a steal and slam prior to halftime. Eli Brooks and Hunter Dickinson put the finishing touches on Michigan's comeback as Colorado State couldn't keep up in the final minutes. Dickinson scored a game-high 21 points, while Brooks totaled 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Collins compiled a career-high 14 points in his tournament debut. Mountain West Player of the Year David Roddy had 13 points and four assists in the loss.


Tennessee wiIl meet the Wolverines on Saturday following a dominant 88-56 win over Longwood. Santiago Vescovi led the way with a game-high 18 points and seven assists on 6/8 from 3-point range as the Volunteers won their 8th straight game. Kennedy Chandler, a potential lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, showed off his next level handle, speed and vision. The 6'0 guard finished with 13 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals, highlighted by a two-handed dunk off the dribble. Josiah-Jordan James totaled 17 points and nine rebounds, while John Fulkerson added 15 points.
