Cade Cunningham outduels Anthony Edwards in record-setting affair

Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons pulled off a 119-105 upset over the Minnesota Timberwolves as former top overall draft picks Cade Cunningham and Anthony Edwards met in a memorable performance at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday! Cunningham compiled a season-high 40 points to go with nine assists and six rebounds, while Edwards erupted for a career-best 53 points to set the Little Caesars Arena scoring record. Edwards was seemingly unstoppable all night but it wasn't enough to fuel the Timberwolves to a win.

Cunningham helped the Pistons get off to a quick start, finishing a fastbreak dunk on the opening possession and drilling a buzzer-beating jumper at the end of the first quarter to take a 33-28 lead. The Pistons guard got the crowd going with an alley-oop off the backboard to forward Ausar Thompson in the early stages as well. Edwards had his fair share of highlights, shooting 10/15 from 3-point territory including three consecutive 3-pointers in the third quarter en route to his record-setting performance.

Both players displayed why they were selected atop the NBA Draft in recent years and are projected to be named 2025 NBA All-Stars. Cunningham capped off his 40-point outing with a turnaround jumper to put the finishing touches on an impressive win. The Pistons improved to 17-18 with the win and will remain in postseason contention, while the Timberwolves have suffered a third straight loss to fall to 17-17 as they continue to struggle after coming into the season with legitimate championship aspirations.

"We were doomed by a poor start. I thought our start was low-energy. Then of course in the second quarter, we had a lineup that had been producing a lot for us offensively and we went through a huge dry spell," Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch explained in the postgame press conference. "Obviously Anthony Edwards had it going tonight. In the second half, we were able to find some rhythm but then we couldn't get enough stops at the other end of the floor. It was just disjointed from the get go."
