2025 Big Ten regular season awards announced ahead of annual tournament

Braden Smith, Purdue Boilermakers

The 2025 Big Ten Conference regular season awards were announced ahead of the annual tournament with Purdue Boilermakers star point guard Braden Smith being named Player of the Year. Maryland Terrapins center Derik Queen took home Freshman of the Year, while Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo received Coach of the Year!


2025 Big Ten Awards

Player of the Year: Braden Smith (Purdue guard)

Freshman of the Year: Derik Queen (Maryland center)

Coach of the Year: Tom Izzo (Michigan State coach)

Defender of the Year: Ace Baldwin (Penn State guard)

Sixth Man of the Year: Will Riley (Illinois forward)


Wisconsin Badgers guard John Tonje, Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, Nebraska Cornhuskers forward Brice Williams and Michigan Wolverines center Vlad Goldin joined Smith as part of the All-Big Ten First Team. Smith became the first player in Big Ten history to total 500 points, 270 assists, 140 rebounds and 70 steals en route to earning Player of the Year.

5. Vlad Goldin (Michigan center)


Ohio State Buckeyes point guard Bruce Thornton, Northwestern Wildcats small forward Nick Martinelli, Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Dawson Garcia and Michigan forward Danny Wolf appeared on the All-Big Ten Second Team with Queen. The Maryland center was second in the Big Ten with 13 double-doubles during his freshman campaign.

2. Nick Martinelli (Northwestern forward)

3. Dawson Garcia (Minnesota forward)

4. Danny Wolf (Michigan forward)

5. Derik Queen (Maryland center)


Maryland guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie, Michigan State guard Jase Richardson and Illinois Fighting Illini guard Kasparas Jakučionis were placed on the All-Big Ten Third Team alongside Rutgers Scarlet Knights freshman phenoms Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey. Harper and Bailey were the only Big Ten freshmen to rank among the top-10 scorers in the conference.

2. Jase Richardson (Michigan State guard)

3. Dylan Harper (Rutgers guard)

4. Kasparas Jakučionis (Illinois guard)

5. Ace Bailey (Rutgers forward)


Michigan State guard Jaden Akins and UCLA Bruins forward Kobe Johnson joined Oregon Ducks tandem TJ Bamba and Nate Bittle on the All-Big Ten Defensive Team along with Baldwin. The Penn State point guard led the conference with 2.4 steals per game and is widely regarded as one of the premier on-ball perimeter defensive players in the country.

2. Jaden Akins (Michigan State guard)

3. TJ Bamba (Oregon guard)

4. Kobe Johnson (UCLA forward)

5. Nate Bittle (Oregon center)


The All-Big Ten Freshman Team was filled with next level talent as Harper and Bailey are projected to be top-10 picks in the 2025 NBA Draft, while Richardson, Jakučionis and Queen are likely first round picks as well. Jakučionis led Illinois with 15.2 points and 4.8 assists, while Richardson was second on Michigan State with 11.6 points per game.
