Oregon earned the top seed in the playoff after going 13-0 and taking home the Big Ten championship, led by quarterback Dillon Gabriel and defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei. Ohio State rebounded from a stunning loss to rival Michigan in the regular season finale by blowing past Tennessee 42-17 behind star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith's 103 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the opening round. Despite losing to Oregon 32-31 in mid October, Ohio State opened as 2.5-point favorites in the Rose Bowl.
Georgia outlasted Texas 22-19 in overtime in the SEC championship game but quarterback Carson Beck suffered a season-ending injury so back up Gunner Stockton will be forced into the spotlight. The Bulldogs are fueled by running back Trevor Etienne and linebacker Jalon Walker. Notre Dame edged in-state opponent Indiana 27-17 in the opening round as quarterback Riley Leonard racked up 231 total yards and two touchdowns. Georgia enters the Sugar Bowl as 1.5-point favorites over Notre Dame.
Penn State rolled past SMU 38-10 as running back tandem Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the opening round last weekend. The Nittany Lions fell to Oregon in the Big Ten title game but are 11.5-point favorites over Boise State heading into the Fiesta Bowl. Boise State ran through the Mountain West behind Heisman Trophy runner up and star running back Ashton Jeanty, who has compiled 2,497 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns this season.
Texas bounced back from a heartbreaking loss to Georgia in the SEC title game by outlasting Clemson 38-24 in the first round as running back Jaydon Blue racked up 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the win. Arizona State earned a bye after winning the Big 12 crown, powered by running back Cameron Skattebo's 208 total yards and three touchdowns. Even though Arizona State is the higher seed, Texas is 12.5-point favorites to win the Peach Bowl and move onto the semifinals for a second straight year.
