NBA: Week 1 Playoff Takeaways

Staff Writer

1) Luka Donćić is going to be a legend (if he isn't already): The 21-year-old Slovenian star added another memorable moment to his already impressive postseason résumé on Sunday, August 23 as he knocked down a buzzer-beating, step-back 3-pointer to take down the Clippers 135-133 in OT. In just four playoff games, Donćić is averaging an astounding 31.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game. Check out his must-see game-winner here.

2) The Celtics and Raptors are contenders: In just a matter of hours, Boston and Toronto both advanced to the second round, setting up a highly anticipated matchup between the two Eastern Conference foes. Jayson Tatum had 28 points and 15 rebounds in a Game 4 win over Philadelphia, while Toronto's bench dropped 100 (!) points in the series-closing victory versus Brooklyn. The Raptors-Celtics series is set to begin on Thursday, August 27.

3) Philadelphia needs to make a coaching change: Even before Ben Simmons went down with a season-ending injury, it seemed like the 76ers were destined to bow out in the first round to the Celtics. Now that Philly's season is officially over, it's time for general manager Elton Brand to figure out what's next. Some people want to trade either Joel Embiid or Simmons, while others want head coach Brett Brown gone. I think the second option happens soon.

4) Denver might have to do the same a year from now: The Nuggets came into their first round series against the Jazz as favorites, but after four games, it seems like they might need to make a coaching change as well. Denver trails the series 3-1 and if they can't come back, the organization might have to consider replacing Mike Malone. He has helped turn around the team but two straight disappointing postseason runs is not a good look for his future.

5) Paul George has to step up in Game 5: George is one of the best two-way players in the NBA but in the playoffs, he has been absolutely abysmal. The 6-time All-Star, who is just one year removed from finishing third in the MVP race, has put up a 15-7-4 statline on 27.3% shooting from the field and 20.8% from 3-point range. If he can get back on track, the Clippers should win in six games, especially since Kristaps Porzingis has been ruled out for Game 5.
