MLB: Tigers take Torkelson with top pick
The Detroit Tigers have selected Spencer Torkelson with the first overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Torkelson, who is just 20-years-old, played first baseman and third baseman at Arizona State over the last three years. Before that, the right-hander hit .430 with 11 home runs and 99 RBI in high school as he attended Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, California. As a freshman with the Sun Devils, he hit .320 with 25 homers and 53 RBI in 55 games played. He was named Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman of the Year and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Torkelson added six more home runs in his junior year prior to cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tigers went 47-114 last year and will look to add Torkelson to the mix over the next few seasons.
