NFL: Takeaways from the draft
Kansas City got help on both sides of the ball: The defending Super Bowl champions started draft night by picking up yet another quick pass catcher. Andy Reid adds Clyde Edwards-Helaire (RB/LSU) to a team that already has Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, Sammy Watkins, and Damien Williams. After that, Kansas City took Willie Gay (LB/Mississippi State) and Mike Danna (DE/Michigan) to shore up a defense that is looking to improve.
Dak Prescott gets another weapon, and Jerry Jones adds defensive depth: Dallas shocked a lot of people when they drafted Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb at #17. They might have the best wide receiving group in the league now with Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and Lamb. Understandably, Jones couldn't pass on Lamb, and they were still able to add quality players in Trevon Diggs (CB/Alabama) and Neville Gallimore (DT/Oklahoma).
Miami is building to compete in the AFC East, just not this year: The Dolphins needed to draft a quarterback and an offensive tackle in the first round and they did both, taking Tua Tagovailoa (QB/Alabama) and Austin Jackson (OT/USC), the first with the #5 pick. Miami added Robert Hunt (G/Louisiana) and Tua's teammate Raekwon Davis (DT/Alabama) in later rounds. The Dolphins are stockpiling a lot of talent, they're just young, so they'll have to develop.
John Elway was dead set on getting Drew Lock some speed: Jerry Jeudy is my favorite wide receiver prospect since Amari Cooper and he fell all the way down to #15, where the Broncos snatched him up. It's clear that Elway wanted to get his QB Drew Lock some speed on the outside, and he picked up Jeudy, KJ Hamler (WR/Penn State), and Tyrie Cleveland (WR/Florida). The Broncos also grabbed Lloyd Cushenberry (C/LSU) with the 83rd pick.
The Giants addressed line issues, but failed to get Daniel Jones any help: New York selected Georgia OT Andrew Thomas with the #4 overall pick. I think Thomas will do a good job of protecting Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley for years to come, but NY didn't add to their offense at all beyond that, which I think was a mistake. Xavier McKinney (S/Alabama), Matt Peart (OT/UConn), and Cam Brown (LB/Penn State) were other notable picks.
