NFL: Cam Newton's top destinations
1. Chicago Bears: The Bears remain the best option for Cam Newton, who threw for 572 yards and a 56.2% completion rate last year in two games before going down with a season-ending injury. Chicago has gone 20-12 over the last two years but have been riddled with the bad play of quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Trubisky has shown glimpses of success because of his athleticism and speed, and a 30-year-old Newton is still very capable of that.
2. Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers have lost quarterback Phillip Rivers and running back Melvin Gordon recently, so they're definitely looking for someone to come right in and be the focus of the offense. Newton isn't the player he was in 2015 but that wasn't that long ago, and he can still be really dangerous throwing and running. If he's protected well, I think Newton could take the Chargers from 5-11 to competing for a playoff spot.
3. New England Patriots: The Patriots are opening looking for a franchise quarterback for the first time in decades as Tom Brady is on his way to Tampa Bay. New England signed Brian Hoyer last week and they have Jarrett Stidham preparing to compete for the starting spot but nothing is locked up yet. Newton could, at the very least, hold the job down for a few seasons while Stidham matured. I'm not sure if he'd fit in Bill Belichick's system, though.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers have a lot of options at quarterback with Ben Roethlisberger coming back from injury, while Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges report back after splitting time last year. But none of the three really jump off the page like Newton does. Imagine Newton's long ball to Juju Smith-Schuster. That could be a great duo within the AFC North. I don't see Pittsburgh doing it though because they'd likely have to get rid of Roethlisberger.
5. Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins seem stuck. They have some good talent on the roster but the quarterbacks are really holding them back, and it's not looking much better for the time being as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen are the leaders right now. Miami might draft a QB with their first round pick but that's not a guarantee. If the Dolphins want to start over then they might as well build through the draft, but Newton is the best veteran starter on the market.
