CBB: NCAA Tournament cancelled

The NCAA announced that they would be cancelling the annual NCAA Tournament on Thursday, March 12. The decision seemed to be heading this way as the NBA postponed their regular season after Utah Jazz Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus. On Thursday afternoon, various conferences announced their decision to cancel their respective conference tournaments.

The Big Ten, American, and SEC led the way, before others fell in line like the ACC, Big 12, MAC, Pac-12, and Big East. Eventually, all winter and spring sports were cancelled for the remainder of the season and the NCAA Tournament was officially called off. The tournament was scheduled to start on Tuesday, March 17 with the beginning of the First Four. There would have been four games played in a two-day span in Dayton to begin the 68-team tournament.

It’s an unfortunate way to end a historical season in which Michigan State, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, Louisville, Gonzaga, and Baylor all held the top spot in the AP rankings. Dayton and San Diego State also spent the majority of the season in the top-five. The Final Four would have taken place on Saturday, April 4 in Atlanta. The top four seeds likely would have been Kansas, Gonzaga, Dayton, and either Baylor or Kentucky.
