CFB: South, 45-16, Wins Senior Bowl

The South defeated the North, 45-16, in the 2017-18 Senior Bowl, which produces a platform for the best four-year players, their final action as a college student before preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft. Some of the stars that took the field were Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, and Rashaad Penny, who should each be drafted come April, including the first two as potential first round selections. Kyle Lauletta was a standout as well, after playing for Richmond the last four seasons.

He threw for 198 yards on 66.7 percent passing and three touchdowns for the winning South team. The North quarterbacks didn’t have as much success, but Allen did throw for 158 yards and a pair of scores. Mayfield, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma, complied just nine yards on 42.8 percent passing prior to leaving early to be with his sick mother. Penny, the South’s main running back from San Diego State, rushed for 64 yards and received 73 yards, while finding the end zone once.

A couple of receivers for the South impressed, as well. D.J. Chark out of LSU caught five balls for 160 yards and a score. Marcell Ateman out of Oklahoma State, caught a 14-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The South compiled 548 yards, in what became their third consecutive victory over the North. Lauletta was named the MVP. Watch for Allen to be taken within the first five picks, and Mayfield should be the fourth QB selected behind Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Allen, but is still projected by most to be in the opening round.
