CFB: Music to Their Ears
Power Five's Most Powerful Moments - Music to Their Ears:
"Oh the band is out on the field!" are some of the most iconic words ever said in college football. And no they weren't describing the halftime show. They were describing the most amazing play the Pac-12 (formerly the Pac-10) conference has ever seen. To this day it is regarded by many as the greatest play of all-time. This storied rivalry started in 1892 and features Stanford as the all-time leader with a 63-46-11 record. The 1982 battle of the "Big Game" was definitely the best. Late in the fourth quarter, Stanford trailed 19-17 when John Elway converted a 4th & 17 on his own 13 to keep the game going. Stanford would go onto hit a field goal after getting in position and calling a timeout with eight seconds left.
California had one last chance on the kick off, which was at the 25-yard line instead of the 40-yard line due to a celebration penalty. Cal accidentally sent only 10 men on the field on the play and after lateral-ing several times, they found their way into the end zone. What makes this play so incredibly insane was that the Stanford band was on the field and Cal had to fight through them and the Cardinal players themselves. Some honorable mentions would start with Stanford beating USC on the road under Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll's empire at USC that we will never forget, and last would be freshman Sam Darnold leading USC to a comeback win at the Rose Bowl against Penn State. Whether the band is on the field or not, the Pac-12 is a great conference.
