CFB: College Football Wayoff
The first 2017 College Football Playoff rankings are here, dropping on Halloween night. These rankings are not your typical expected stature of teams so far. They are far more spooky than what they should have been and I apologize for that bad pun. Here I will dive into what the College Football Playoff Committee got right, and what they got wrong.
Here is what they got right: Putting Penn State at No. 7, putting TCU at No. 8, and keeping No. 5 Oklahoma above No. 6 Ohio State. Penn State is not that great of team, behind their highly overrated running back Saquon Barkley, and their near loss to Iowa and loss to Ohio State proves that. TCU showed their true colors by falling victim to No. 16 Iowa State's upset train this season. And lastly, both Ohio State and Oklahoma have one loss this season and considering Oklahoma beat them head-to-head, they deserve to be ahead of the Buckeyes in the rankings, at least for the time being.
Here is what they got wrong and we will start with the disrespect of No. 2 Alabama. Why is a team whose clearly been the best team in football and has been the consistently top team in the country for almost a decade, ranked behind a weaker team in their conference? Alabama is superior and more talented and it will show when they blow No. 1 Georgia out in the SEC Championship. Next, why is No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 Clemson in. Notre Dame was ready to fire Brian Kelly just a couple weeks ago because of how shaky they were.
And now they are going to be on college football's brightest stage because of two blowout wins over very overrated opponents. But here is the best part: Notre Dame doesn't have a conference championship game, obviously, so if they win out, they are a guaranteed lock to get in. This penalizes and puts a disadvantage on conference teams who are actually playing in a tough and very meaningful conference championship. Clemson on the other hand, has been inconsistent and lost to Syracuse just a couple of weeks back so why they are in just doesn't make sense considering another team in their conference is undefeated.
That team being No. 10 Miami. Lastly, why aren't Oklahoma and Ohio State in. Ohio State has played very well almost all season and took down the No.2 team in the country last weekend, and their only loss was to Oklahoma. Now Oklahoma, they have played great almost all season as well and have only lost to Iowa State, who we now know is actually a very good team. It's wrong and a shame that this is what we have all been waiting for all season. The Committee totally botched this one. This is how it should have gone.
