NFL: The Man Behind The Kick Six

"There goes Davis, Davis is gonna run it all the way back! Auburn's gonna win the football game!" Those famed words called by sportscaster Rod Bramblett, are cemented in college football's memory. Auburn had a miracle season going into arguably the greatest rivalry game in sports, the Iron Bowl. The one who poured that cement was Chris Davis Jr., the senior from Birmingham, Alabama.

Coming out of Woodlawn High School, home of pitcher Doyle Alexander, linebacker Karlos Dansby, and legendary coach Bobby Bowden, Chris Davis Jr. Was a 3-star recruit. He put up good numbers on both sides of the ball in his senior season, drawing attention from top schools, and eventually choosing Auburn. He ran for 877 yards on 134 carries, had eight catches for 185 yards, made 23 tackles, had three pass breakups, and returned kicks and punts for over 500 yards. He was an all-around talent going into his freshman year.

What many don't know, is that Chris Davis is a national champion. In his freshman year, Cam Newton led the Tigers to their first BCS title. Davis registered 12 tackles in nine games. This was followed up by a few pass breakups and 46 tackles in his sophomore year, and 60 tackles and a few more breakups his junior year. Where he really shined was senior year in 2013, though. Davis scored 74 tackles, 14 pass breakups, and the game-winner in the Iron Bowl.

After a famed senior campaign, Davis was a projected mid-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. His name kept falling and falling, ultimately going undrafted. The Chargers were the first team to take a chance on him, giving him the opportunity to make 15 tackles, a forced fumble, and an average of 25.1 yards per return. The Auburn product was then released San Diego and picked up by in-state San Francisco. Davis was eventually released by the 49ers leading to him being in free agency, where he still is today.
