CFB: Week 1's Top Performer
After Week 1's action, we nominated four athletes that stood out amongst his peers, onto our Twitter account - @sprtsposts - and allowed you guys to decide who deserves the Top Performer. Week 1 goes to Baker Mayfield (41 percent), who was (literally) near perfection in No. 7 Oklahoma's season opener against UTEP. Mayfield, a 2016 Heisman finalist, completed 19-20 of his passes for 329 yards, three touchdowns, and an astronomical 97.9 QBR. The Sooners won 56-7, as they'll head to No. 2 Ohio State next week.
Saquon Barkley (34 percent), No. 6 Penn State's running back, wasn't far off, rushing for 172 yards and a pair of scores on just 14 carries. He also had a dazzling 80-yard rush, which helped the Nittany Lions dismantle Akron, 52-0. Barkley also had 54 receiving yards on three catches.
Lamar Jackson (25 percent), the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner, and No. 16 Louisville's signal caller, looked the part of a possible two-time Heisman winner, tossing for 378 yards and two touchdowns, to go along with 107 rushing yards. However, it may have hurt Jackson that he hasn't seemed to fix his carrying issue, losing yet another fumble, which became a troubling pattern towards the end of last season.
Kelly Bryant (0 percent) was the final nomination, as he looked Deshaun Watson-esque in his starting debut for No. 5 Clemson, but it obviously wasn't enough to earn any nods from our followers. Just for reference, though, he did drop 236 yards and a 95.7 QBR on 16-22 passing. Oh, and the Tigers won 56-3.
