CFB: Why Sparty Needs To Shut Up
35. That is the number of wins Michigan State has to Michigan's 69 in their 119-year storied rivalry. Yet, you would think Michigan State's mascot is the Crimson Tide with how much their fans talk about their very short and recent success. Just because the Spartans have climbed to the top, reaching the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and the College Football Playoff in the last five years, doesn't mean they've always been at the top, and the statistics prove it.
The longest win streak in the rivalry was 14 straight by Michigan and the biggest margin of victory was also by the Wolverines, 119-0. Yes that is not a typo. 119-0. That has a nice ring to it. It sounds like what would be the score of the '96 Chicago Bulls playing a 5th grade after school latchkey team.
Now, lets talk about outside of the rivalry:
National Championships:
Michigan - 11
Michigan State - 6
Conference Championships:
Michigan - 42
Michigan State - 11
Bowl Victories:
Michigan - 21
Michigan State - 11
Heisman Winners:
Michigan - 3
Michigan State - 0
Total Wins:
Michigan - 935
Michigan State - 684
I mean all of these numbers aren't even close, so why do Michigan State fans talk so much? One word: Arrogance. But who could blame them, after years of being bullied and labeled as little brother which they will always be, it is natural to get kind of cocky when you taste the sweet juices of victory especially at a time when your arch rival was on one of the worst runs in its history these past 10 years.
So go ahead Sparty, and enjoy what you've done lately, but before you talk down to your bigger rivals, remember this quote from the Golden Globe winning show Breaking Bad, "Just because you kill Jessie James, doesn't make you jessie James."
