MLB: Indians Acquire Jay Bruce
Does anyone remember who the San Francisco Giants gave up to get Cody Ross in 2010? All people remember is how clutch he was in the playoffs to help them win their first of three championships in the next five years. Does anyone remember the player the Detroit Tigers game up to get Delmon Young from the Minnesota Twins? All people remember is the countless clutch at bats he had and the big home runs he hit to knock out the New York Yankees in the ALCS - in which he was named MVP.
What I'm trying to make you understand is just because the non-waiver trade deadline passed doesn't mean impactful players couldn't be moved to help a club make some noise in the playoffs. The Cleveland Indians made one of the best under the radar moves they could have made by acquiring outfielder Jay Bruce from the New York Mets. What Cleveland is getting is someone who can play RF/DH/1B, adds flexibility to a offense that badly needs power. And that's exactly what Bruce is: POWER.
For an outfield that combined has less than 30 HR, they needed power infused in this team and when your're going for back-to-back World Series appearances, these are the types of moves that don't jump off the page but man will fans be happy when that tough power right handed pitcher is on the mound and your team has the privilege of trotting out a smasher like Bruce.
The Mets just gave up maybe their most consistent hitter for nothing, but on the other hand he was a free agent after the season and odds are he was not gonna come back to Queens. Cleveland gave up nothing to get a good amount better, so why don't other teams do this? Do they just not had the foresight? I guess we'll see when October comes.
