NFL: Dolphins Sign "Retired" Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler was signed yesterday by the Miami Dolphins, to a one-year deal worth $10 million. He played at Vanderbilt University in college, before being drafted No. 11 overall by the Denver Broncos. After three seasons with the Broncos, including a Pro Bowl berth in 2008, Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears in 2009.

In eight seasons with the Bears, Cutler led the team to two 10-5 seasons, in 2010 and 2012, but following a string of successful seasons, he and the team hit a roadblock in 2013. In the four years since, Cutler led the Bears to a porous 17-29 record, while throwing 46 interceptions.

However, in 2015, even though the Bears only went 6-9 with Cutler under center, he experienced one of his top seasons, throwing for 21 touchdowns and 11 picks under offensive coordinator Adam Gase, while completing 64.4 percent of his passes.

Gase is now the head coach for the Dolphins, and after going 10-6 in the regular season last year, before losing in the Wild Card to the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was ready to try and push Miami to the next level. Ryan Tannehill, the teams starting quarterback, went down with yet another knee injury in practice last week, and is expected to miss most of the season, if not the entirety.

Cutler, who is 34-years-old, retired in May to take a broadcasting job with FOX, but after Tannehill's injury, he decided to come back for at least one more season. Cutler will have to compete with Matt Moore for the teams starting job, but with Jay Ajayi, Jarvis Landry, and Kenny Stills on the offense, the 'Fins have a pretty good young core, that needs a quarterback to simply be steady. Can Cutler come in and do that? We'll have to wait and see.
