MLB: Martin falls to Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays have selected Austin Martin with the 5th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. The third baseman out of Vanderbilt was projected to go in the 2-3 range but the Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins passed on him, so the Blue Jays grabbed him with their first round pick. Martin hit .392 last year, helping the Commodores win a national championship over Michigan in the 2019 College World Series. He is also a consistent and powerful hitter, and can play multiple positions, including second and third base, and center field, which is partly why Toronto couldn't pass on him. The Blue Jays went just 67-95 last season and they'll hope to return to the playoffs in the next few years as Martin joins a solid group of young guys like Bo Bichette, Ryan Borucki, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Rowdy Tellez.
