MLB: Nationals, Athletics favored to win

Staff Writer

#6 Milwaukee Brewers (89-73) @ #5 Washington Nationals (93-69): Max Scherzer (11-7, 2.92 ERA) will take on Brandon Woodruff (11-3, 3.62 ERA) in the NL Wild Card game in what should be a great matchup. The Nationals, who most expected would take a step back after losing Bryce Harper, improved this season and now has one of the best pitchers in the league taking the mound in Scherzer. Woodruff, on the other hand, will look to continue his excellent season with a solid outing tonight. Without Christian Yelich (.329, 44 HR), the other Brewers hitters will have to step up and Ryan Braun and Lorenzo Cain are both game-time decisions. Also keep an eye on Anthony Rendon (.319, 34 HR) for Washington. The Nationals come into the game as 1.5-run favorites.

#6 Tampa Bay Rays (96-66) @ #5 Oakland Athletics (97-65): Oakland will be in the AL Wild Card game for the second straight season, but this time it's at home. The Athletics come into this game with more home runs (257-217) and runs scored (845-769) but the Rays have a better earned run average (3.65-3.97). Charlie Morton (16-6, 3.05 ERA) will start for Tampa Bay but Bob Melvin hasn't announced the starter for the Athletics yet. Oakland is led by Marcus Semien (92 RBI, 33 HR), while the Rays have Austin Meadows (89 RBI, 33 HR) out in centerfield. Robbie Grossman, Eric Sogard, and Lou Trivino are the three questionable players. Oakland comes into the game with a very impressive 52-29 home record and they are favored to advance.
