NFL: Giants jump all over Lions on the road
The New York Giants defeated the Detroit Lions in their second preseason matchup this past Friday. The Lions got off to a positive start as Matt Prater connected on a 44-yard field goal. But from there, it was pretty much all down hill for Detroit. The Giants answered back with an easy score by Wayne Gallman. Davis Webb found the former Clemson running back in the middle of the field and he walked into the end zone untouched. Aldrick Rosas added a 55-yard field goal late in the second quarter to add to the Giants’ lead and send them into the half with a 10-3 advantage. The Lions had just 89 yards of total offense in the entire first half. It got a little better for Detroit in the third quarter, but still not enough to make it competitive.
Kyle Lauletta came in for Webb and was able to scramble for a touchdown in the third quarter to increase New York’s leads to 14 points. It was a 17-3 game at the end of the third period, and most of the starters were taken out (if they weren’t already). Jake Rudock, former Michigan quarterback, looked a little bit better in this one as he finished with 178 yards for the Lions. He completed 76.7 percent of his passes and was able to find the end zone twice, once on a pass to T.J. Jones and another on a fourth down QB sneak after the game was all but over. Webb finished 14/20 for 140 yards and a touchdown, while Gallman ran for 5.2 yards per carry. Gallman earned most of the workload in the Giants’ backfield as they decided not to play Saquon Barkley.
He was the No. 2 overall pick in the most recent NFL Draft, and recorded 43 yards on five carries in his debut. Although, 39 yards came from his first carry. Matthew Stafford totaled 51 yards and a 77.9 QBR in just a few series before being replaced. The Lions are now 0-2 in the preseason with losses to the Oakland Raiders and Giants. They’ll finish with games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, before facing the New York Jets in Week 1 of the regular season. The Giants are 1-1, and will take on their rival Jets before ending their exhibition matches against the New England Patriots. The Giants open their season against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 9th.
